Sandwich Chain to Pay $1,000 for Every Pound Lost
Losing weight has never been this financially lucrative. Fast food giant, Subway, announced that it will pay former Biggest Loser contestant Shay Sorrells $1,000 for every pound she will lose. In addition, the restaurant chain also signed up Sorrells as their spokesperson for 2010.
Sorrells, however, will not be part of the show’s cast for Season Nine but will still be taking part in shedding those pounds. She intends to lose a hundred pounds by May 2010, right before the show’s finale. To do this, she plans to eat mostly from Subway’s Fresh Fit menu. During Season Eight, Sorrell lost about 170 lbs.
TV viewers first caught a glimpse of Sorrells as a 476-lb. woman, making her the heaviest contestant in the show ever. However, season nine would be a different story. Sorrells will lose the biggest “Biggest Loser” title this season to 525-lb. Michael Ventrella, a Chicago disc jockey.
Her routine workout usually starts at around five in the morning. From Monday to Friday, Sorrells goes out of the apartment, armed with a piece of fruit and almonds to energize her for a two-hour workout, which consists of kettlebell exercises and an hour on the treadmill. After that, she would head to work for the rest of the day. Then it’s back to the gym for a second session that usually lasts up to four hours.
Though she never had a shot at winning, Sorrells relates that the show’s trainers issued her a challenge. “I heard him say '$1,000 a pound.' And I thought, 'Did I hear that right?’”
